rectocele???

Is a rectocele the same as a prolapsed rectum? chester

Ah jeez, this sort of question brings out the pedant in me. I suppose a rectocele is the same as a prolapsed rectum, technically. A rectocele is a bulge in the rectal/vaginal wall so this is a sort of prolapse, yes? Though when I think prolapse I think of things falling down toward also falling out, which rectoceles don't generally do - they don't generally come 'out' of the anus. I am sure others with more knowledge will be around soon with better explanations.

Thanks for the input, I have been told three different things by three different doctors, one who wants to do surgery. My rectum protrudes about 1" on constipation days and 1/4" on good poop days. Sometime the poops are flattened and skinny and sometimes they look normal, it all depends on what I eat, I guess. I know if I don't excercise enough I am constipated no matter what I eat. Thanks. chester

Hello Chester,

These are two completely different things, although both result primarily from alterations in the pathway of intraabdominal pressure.

Rectocele is a bulging of the rectum against the back vaginal wall. The rectum naturally curves forward at the level of the lower vagina, but in prolapse that curvature is accentuated and the vaginal wall/fascia thinned so that the bulging moves into the vaginal space and sometimes beyond the vaginal opening. Rectal prolapse is the rectum turning inside out of the anus and quite rare in women. I am guessing you have the former.

Hope you can improve your symptoms with time and care.

Christine

Hi Christine, I believe I have the rectal prolapse, as my rectum protrudes out of my anus about 1" if I am constipated and 1/4" when I am not. When I poo I have to lean back on the toilet otherwise it won't come out. Is there anything I can do to rectify this problem? I try very hard not to get constipated but sometimes it is inevitable that I do. Chester

Hi Chester,

My, you are really having a tough time of it. I hope some of the suggestions others have offered will help. By now you probably have an idea that this postural work takes pressure off that area. The vagina is usually the path of least resistance for prolapse and the anal/rectal canal spared - but not always.

An anti-inflammatory diet is going to be key to helping stabilize the prolapsing anus. While some inflammatory mediators play a role in keeping constant tone in the anal sphincter (which we want), others antagonize that process. When the anus is greatly inflamed it can lose its tone and become open, soft and subject to prolapse. I'm not sure about the particular Larch product being discussed, but Larch sawdust is a known lipoxygenase inhibitor and it is this enzyme that is responsible for many inflammatory processes.

Epsom salts sitz baths would be very soothing. I know you had a terrible experience with cream. I think plain milk or cream would affect me like that too, but I'm finding cultured raw milk extremely healing. Culturing breaks down the casein in milk, which is the protein responsible for allergy and indigestibility. Just a thought.

Please keep us posted.

Hi Christine, thanks for your advice, unfortunately there is nowhere in our immediate area where I can get cultured milk products. We live in quite a remote area in Montana. I have to drive 200 miles round trip for groceries. I am finding it very difficult to keep fresh produce for very long and I know I need the fruit and veggies. I do take Krill oil capsules as I was told they have anti-inflammatory properties, I also take the Phillips probiotics, I take 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar twice a day, I have upped the water intake to 10 glasses per day. I really do not want to have surgery, nor do I want to return to a medical doctor, they seem to push surgery and drugs. I never take chemical drugs, I know that they promote constipation, so rule out that. Anyway I will keep plodding on, the gas has subsided quite a lot and I credited the vinegar for that, my husband is also quite pleased about that, he likes to be the best at that!!! Thanks again for your help. Chester (or should I say the Pain in The Arse)
