Re use of ring pessaries

Body:

I have had a ring pessary for about a year with a lot of discomfort. The latest one was replaced last week and I have had to remove it already as its very painful.

I understood that it was always replaced with a "new" one. I found that the latest one appears to have marks and dents that would indicate that it may have been recycled ?

The previous one also had to be replaced because it had a split in it causing severe pain...maybe it was recycled too?

The packet that my latest one came out of looked similar to an autoclave package used for surgical instruments....does anyone know whether this is common practice?

I am concerned about the risk of infection as well as the pain I have been experiencing.

Has anyone any information about reuse thanks

Try and find the packet it came in. It will probably carry some information that will help you to find out where it came from, and its history. You could also ask to see another one where you got this one from, and take the information from that one.

It sounds appalling in these days of HIV/AIDS that something like a pessary could be recycled, but it *may* be OK if it is sterilised properly. Only the company could tell you. Cuts in health funding can produce some unexpected effects!

Whatever you find out I think you would be wise to take it back and ask for a different one. If this one is not comfortable you probably will not use it, so there's little point in keeping it. There are a lot of different shapes out there in pessary land. There are some experienced pessary users among Members. You will probably find they will post with more specific suggestions.

Cheers

I would ask them to please let you open Your OWN pessary on changing it - Making sure it is new and unused. If they refuse to - Go elsewhere.

Personally I would not want a 2nd hand pessary no matter how cleaned!

They should accept your concerns if they are reputable

When I got my pessary, the doc told me that, if it was uncomfortable I could just bring it back and get a smaller one. She said they sterilize and re-use them. I would definitely ask for a new one if this makes you uncomfortable.

Sorry, but I find this pretty ridiculous. Milex produced the very same (and for the most part worthless) pessaries for decades and decades so re-tooling of their manufacturing equipment was never an issue. I think sand is the major ingredient in silicone with a few other cheap emulsifiers and bonding agents, a-dime-a-dozen for sure. That company had to have made a phenomenal profit, which of course made it attractive to the global corporation that eventually bought it. Medical waste is one of the most difficult environmental problems of our time…yet where are we seeing recycling? Puh-LEEEEZ!!!. I hope all women demand an unopened package containing their not-touched-by-human-hands pessary! The right thing is for doctors to have an assortment for women to try and to take time to find the proper fit. Then those pessaries can be autoclaved and sterilized. Geeeeez…

…and I realize it’s the practitioners themselves who are doing the recycling, but the discarded pessaries should be returned to the manufacturer for a full refund.

I totally agree. The practitioners charged my insurance co $150 for the "insertion" of the pessary and I had to pay (out-of-pocket) $70 for the ring itself. And to think it was likely recycled...Insane.

I had to get a new pessary last summer. The doctor I am going to now gave me the info I needed and I had to order my own from the supplier. After I got it I took it back to him to insert.
I got everything including the insert for fitting instructions for health care professional. In one part of the instructions it says,"the use life of a pessary is limited. Examine frequently for signs of deteriortion."
Obviously your doctor doesn't read the manufacturerer's instructions. I think I would try another doctor.
Best wishes.

In London, England, at the renowned pharmacy, "John Bell and Croyden" you can buy your own pessary...new, unused. There are buckets at the back of this awesome pharmacy. If you know your size, you just pick up 3 or 4 at about 14 dollars (I think..maybe less) (Canadian) each. These pessaries are wrapped, sealed, and clearly new, not used. So, if any of you visit London, England, head off to "John Bell and Croyden" the only pharmacy of this name in London, England. The pharmacy is in Oxford Circus. These pessaries are available in London, England without a prescription so I believe you can simply phone the pharmacy with your size and they will mail them to you. This pharmacy does international shipments daily and is a wonderful resource.

Note that if you wish to call London, England for a pessary order, you must be aware of time changes. They are 6 hours ahead of my time, so I must phone early in the morning to get them. Their phone number, including country code (you simply dial the number below and you should get them...don't add anything...the entire number below is all you need).

I think from the sound of it, you will save a great deal of money ordering your pessaries from overseas.
