Sitting at home and office

I'm pretty new here, so bear with me. Regarding sitting at home or in the office, I have great difficulty sitting indian style since childhood, discomfort and even pain. Also, sitting back on my ankles is the same. Straddling is OK, but I have no "chair" to try it and have very little room in my living room. Does anyone have any suggestions about what I could use or purchase (and where) to work on the sitting posture?

One more question regarding sea sponges as pessaries - commercial pessaries do not stay in for me. Would like to try the sea sponges but need to know where to obtain, whether you "cut them to size", whether they will stay in place and what can be used to lubricate them if uncomfortable. I'm a 61 year old with three vaginal births over 30 years ago and no surgeries - and will NOT get any for this matter. Would welcome any ideas or answers.

Hi Sharon, I am 61 also, and have had 3 vaginal births! The sea sponges are working for me most of the time. The website or a toll free number is www.jadeandpearl.com or phone is 1-800-219-9765, and you get prompt service. They are only $7 for 2 and being reusable , I have used only 2 in about 3 months. I just rinse it out with water. I think I read somewhere that you shouldn't use soap, or lubricant, but clean it every 3 days or so with peroxide! The lady at Jade and Pearl are very helpful and will answer all the questions, so use the toll free number and talk in person. Hi again, I forgot to comment on chairs. I have a chair that was popular about 15 years ago for computers. Do you remember the one with the slanted seat and the knee area? That pulls me into the posture just fine. I found it at the goodwill store for $5 and re-upholstered it. Or I sit on a cushion in the living room with another small pillow behind my back. In the car a small pillow works fine and sit straight up. Hope all this helps you. Nancy:)

This post about 'chairs' made me think it might be just time to send an update. I started doing Christine's posture work about 18 months ago....perhaps more, not sure. I am now 58 years old and I say with full confidence that using the proper posture is the solution. I walk the dog every morning, going up a steep incline; I'd suppose a four mile hike all together. While I walk, swiftly and steadily, I often remind myself of the correct posture by trying to envision that I am a Centaur...You know, that half-horse half-man depicted as the constellation Sagittarius. Well, that is fun and it does help. Besides my walks, I stay in this wonderful and envigorating posture at all times...It has become so very nautural and easy now....I would be very uncomfortable if I were to go back to my old stance. I have said this before, but I do find that the posture is much more than a physical thing, it has changed me at a deeper level i.e. It has made me confidnent, centered, stronger in mind, body, and spirit...I feel 10 more times capable of doing hard work and manual labor than I ever have and I love it. You know how experiments show that if you smile even when you are feeling blue this smile will cause the body to emit 'the happy hormones' and literally changes our mood to a happier one. Well, change the posture to one of that is of the Natural Woman which is 'grand, regal, beautiful and of higher-Divine stature' and we become that self-sufficiant grounded, royal, assured, capable, giving and loving person at a chemical-hormonal level... so's my guess from my experience with this.

As to chairs...I have to do a lot of work on the computer ( used to do more) and since working with Whole Woman guidance, and taking suggestions from these website messages I realized my positon at the computer was very bad for the prolapse, and most certainly contributed to its instigation...so I found a nice narrow bench and I put some pillows on it and I have turned the bench sideways, sitting on it as if I am riding a horse ( that horse thing seems significant in my life)...My feet are flat on the floor and I am 'riding my horse' while I type. This position keeps me ever vigilant in pushing myself up and curved out behind so as to sit on the pubic bones...just as you would if you were sitting on and riding a real horse properly; pressing down and holding up. I used to ride horses and this does feel so good and also seems to remind me of something childlike, which is joyfulness and amusing. I can stay at the computer for a long time and at the same time I am excersising my body by using my butt and leg muscels in staying in the proper alignment all the time....my back will begin to hurt if and when I slouch, like an automatic alarm system...Life flows through this open line from head to toe and yes it is a trip to unknown lands as to what new wonders I am discovering each and everyday while rarely leaving home.

As for the prolapse condition, I never worry about it anymore. I doubt if it will ever go back to normal, but I can easily live with this as it is. I have no problems because of it. Everything is up and inside, so that is good and I believe the posture will keep things that way for as long as I continue to be able... that alone would be just fine.

I hope there is something here that might be of help to others...but mostly, I just want Christine to know how much I appreciate her work so this is more a note of support for her 'gift' and 'mission' in this world.

Joybliss, I enjoyed your letter! What a great idea about the bench! It was very hard to find the type of ergonomical chair that I talked about, but I'll bet it wouldn't be hard to find those benches. Thanks for the tip, and yes I do agree Christines' work is amazing for us fortunate women. Nancy

nancy, I've been on a quest for the chair you describe for years. when I was in P.T. school, there was one in the lab and everyone fought over it. My chiropracter thinks he's seen one in a catalog. As for sitting at the computer, I do what my third grade teacher forbade me to do. I sit at the edge of the chair and tip it forward so the back legs are up off the floor. I balance on my feet (flat on the floor, knees bent at right angles) and on the front legs of the chair (directly under my bottom. I must have known innately in third grade that our spines weren't meant to sit in chairs for hours on end!

Hi Granolamom, The chairs are possibly called Norwegian Balans Chairs! Go to search for that topic on line and you even get pictures. Cheapest one is $87 and free shipping, I think! I do enjoy mine, and it was cheap! But I'm sure the others are nicer! Hope this helps you, or keep calling the thrift shops and if you describe it on the phone they can probably tell you if they have one and then you don't have to make a trip for nothing. Nancy

Christine, I found your post most interesting, especially in light of a recent experience. I see a chiropracter and after an adjustment he has you rest in a recliner for 15 min or so. He has 4 recliners in a sqare room each set at a right angle to the next so your feet point directly at the feet of the person sitting across from you (make any sense?) Anyway, I've begun to notice that when someone sits across from me I feel a pulsing of energy through the soles of my feet up to my head and back. Nothing when the seat across from me is empty. So I definitely believe in energy forces, auras, or whatever you like to call it.

Hi Sharon

I had an ordinary office chair at my workstation, the type that swivels on a five footed base and has an adjustable height seat on a single spindle, height being adjusted with a big knob that screws in tight and holds the top part at the appropriate height.

I removed the back completely and the upholstered wavy-shaped seat and replaced the seat with a piece of level 1/2 inch ply which I cut into an octagon and smoothed the edges. For stability its diameter is slightly less than that of its five-footed base. I fastened it, centred, to the base, with bolts straight down through the ply and through the holes that were previously used to screw the seat on, with a nuts on the bottom. As the metal base was originally designed to be on a bit of a slope I put a number of big fat washers under the ply on one or two of the bolts as shims to level the seat.

On the top I use a nice thick cushion from a sofa that is being reupholstered. I can adjust the overall height of the stool with the normal height adjustment knob, and get it *just right* for keyboard height.

I use it in a straddle position, and it is wide enough for me to sit cross-legged when I get my hammies stretched a bit more. If it doesn't suit me after a while I can just take the ply off and replace the old seat. I already had the plywood. So it cost me zero dollars.
