Physical Therapy

Body:

I went to a female urogynocologist today for a second opinion since I have been experiencing pain and pressure especially after exercise. I have switched my exercise to the bike and rowing machine hoping not to aggravate the discomfort. She said I do have a mild relaxation of the vaginal wall.(was diagnosed earlier with cystocele by gyn.) She recommended physical therapy as she thinks I have some muscle spasms in the pelvic floor. Am wondering what to expect with the therapy and whether anyone has had particular success with it. Has anyone else had these pelvic muscle spasms?

Hi Suzita

I see that nobody has answered this one for you. I have no experience with muscle spasms of the pelvic floor, but my pelvic floor was comatose after a particularly difficult second pregnancy that resulted in a pretty easy labour and birth, and a yummy daughter baby. I had interferential therapy or TENS therapy or something, a few times about 3 months postpartum, I think (it was nearly 23 years ago), which woke everything up bit by bit, so I could at least make the muscles contract. Once the muscles and nerves were awake again, Kegels were easy, and it all got better from there, whereas I couldn't even move these muscles prior to the therapy.

I have a feeling that a lot of things get blamed on muscle spasm, when the practitioner doesn't really know what is going on. IMHO it gives them the reason to try a few different things out, and probably sounds better from a professionalism point of view than, "I don't really know. We'll just try out a few techniques and see if we can fix you up." I think I need to give them the dignity of just getting on with it. If you get fixed up that's great. If you don't, you can cross those therapies off the list of possibilities.

Does that help? I think my pelvic floor would be totally dead these days if I refused therapy, so I am happy.

I think what you gotta remember is that posture is the fundamental thing to get right, backed up with food, clothing, excercise and lifestyle. Just to contradict what I just said, had I known about Wholewoman 23 years ago, I may not have needed the therapy. It's hard to say, in hindsight.

Cheers
