naulil - firebreathing and sponges

Body:

Well, I'm touching wood and crossing fingers and toes as I write this, bit two months after discovering my urethrocele and one month after starting to be serious about exercise, experimenting with a less inflammatory diet, getting the sea sponges the right size - with my first set I was tempted to cut them down until they were smaller than tampons - not very effective - I really think I'm making progress. Have just mastered ( I think) the firebreathing and nauli for the last two weeks - thought still lots to improve.

I'm finding it extraordinay that I was sure that POP and surgery would dominate my life - make me a fragile person- and that was my deep seated feeling only two months ago. At the same time as i've been beginning my journey, my eight year old daughter has been suffering the aftermath of life saving surgery back in June for a perforated appendix. After this, she suffered three separate infections, then a chronic, three month infection of a stitch ( a stitch granuloma) then further surgery for that, then another infection and then pain from adhesions. It was all very necessary surgery - thank goodness for modern surgery when it's necessary - but made me focus on what a very major undertaking any surgery is - and how imperfect the results can be.

I have a few questions about exercise. I know firebreathing is a no-no during menstruation ( unfortunately at 46 i have week long periods every three weeks) but is it safe to continue to nauli? I also remember reading an old post about someone who made spectacualr progress with a cystocele by kegeling while lying upside down on a child's slide. Has any one else found this effective? For an anterior wall prolapse, would one lie on one's front or back? I'm nervous about lying on my stomach because I feel it needs to be rounded, to keep the organs forward.

Any tips from this wonderful collection of women gratefully received.

I would go for on my front, in spite of your concern about squashing the space where your pelvic organs would need to be. If you are lying head down the slide your gravity will send your pelvic organs towards the front of your rib cage, then when you stand up after crashing your face into the sand at the bottom you would leave your belly to relax as you rise to standing and allow them to fall forwards. This is perfect, even if you have a mouthful of sand.

If you lie on your back your organs will be sagging backwards. When you crash the back of your head into the sand at the bottom you will need to contract your rectus abdominus muscles to get vertical again, no matter whether you roll to one side or do a backwards somersault over your head. This certainly *will* push your pelvic organs backwards and potentially down the plug hole, which rather negates the benefit of the Slide manoeuvre. Sand in the hair is not very comfortable either.

Recovering from any manoeuvre is as important as doing it. If it leaves you in an awkward position at the end, recovery to vertical may send your organs back and down, which is not helpful.

I love your image Louise! Nothing to add, except I don't worry about lying on my stomach as I figure I'm not there all day, and i relax in that position. good for playing action figures with kids ;-)

But, I am sooo glad you are finding progress! It does happen, and can be a bit of a "oh, is it really happening?" but it does! It does feel like POP will rule your life, but as someone else once said here, it shifts to a place where you need to be aware and mindful, but that is it. Most of my mindfulness is reminding myself to pull up into posture, be diligent with what i eat, and I watch what i lift. Other than that, i can forget about it mot of the time. But 3 1/2 years ago, it ruled my life ;-(

so hurray! and keep up the moving forward ;-)

Thanks Kiki and Louise! How do you both find the time for such good responses to people's queries?

As my youngest is past the slide and sandpit stage I was thinking of improvising with a sledge and a steep Victorian staircase - ideally without any resulting trips to causalty (E.R.)!

On the subject of Nauli - is there any guidance on its safety during menstruation. It might be on the dictionary of movements bit on the new DVD but my copy won't play that section.
