Travel Insurance

Body:

Hi All,

I was about to buy some travel insurance for said impending holiday, and it asks lots of questions about undiagnosed conditions, and pre existing conditions. Do we mention POP? Or is it a nothing to declare situation. Its not as if its going to need treatment on holiday is it!

What should I do?

Hi Apis
I'm going to the US later this year and hadn't given a thought to declaring my POP on the travel insurance. I don't think I would mention it, I don't feel it is a medical condition, more of an inconvenience.
Did you say you were going to Brittany? - I thought there was reciprocal health care between the UK and other EU countries. I haven't been to europe for a while but I seem to remember getting an E111 form from the post office and you just had to take it with you. Is it different now?

Hi Tintagel,

Thanks for that, of course silly me, we do have the E111 EHIC so should be ok. I have only been abroad twice, first time last year.

I suppose POP isn't a medical condition. But as I am new at this problem I feel like its the end of the world at the moment - It just has to get better.

Hi Apis
I know how you feel, I couldn't stop thinking about it when I first found my POP, it was the last thing I thought of at night and in the morning I would wake up feeling ok and then suddenly remember it, with a horrible sick feeling in my stomach. I couldn't concentate on anything and cried at the drop of a hat. But this place as been a lifeline to me and gradually I have begun to feel better about it all, I'm sure you will too. I hope you holiday will help you too, mine really did, there's nothing like some majestic scenery for giving life some perspective and allowing the soul to breath.

As a general comment these policies have specific inclusions and exclusions. I always work on the principle of "if they don't ask, I don't tell". If POP fitted any particular category of included or excluded conditions I would either mention it or not, accordingly. If there is any sort of claim during the trip and you have not mentioned something you should have mentioned, then the insurance company might decide to try and not allow your claim on the basis of your lying by omission in your application.

They are really just assessing what sort of risk you are to them. I wouldn't imagine that my POP would increase the insurance company's risk at all, but yours might be different. What on earth could happen? Dropping your uterus on the tarmac at an airport and causing all sorts of discomfort to yourself and embarrassment to others? I don't think so. The mind boggles at the possibilities.

Pelvic organ prolapse is probably akin to saggy boobs. Would you tell your travel insurance company that you have prolapsed breast tissue and dropped nipples?

The failsafe option is to ring their enquiries line anonymously and simply ask them if you have to declare it.

Have fun on your trip.
