Something is different

Body:

Two days ago I was down with some kind of stomach virus that had me vomiting all thru the night. As I was going thru this, the force of my muscles reaching down to the depths of my intestines also created a strong downward push against my pelvic prolapse with each up chuck. This was uncontrollable. So now, the vomiting has subsided, and I'm about 4 lbs lighter, but something feels distinctly different in my vaginal area. Before, there was a squishy tennis ball sticking part way out of my vagina. It's very much there now, but I can feel a pulling now that I didn't before...also I can very much feel the bulge when standing or walking. When sitting its ok. Is whatever damage the violent vomiting caused irreversible? I'm concerned. I'm 54 and post hysterectomy surgery for about 15 years. Is there anything I can do to regain some stability?

Hi Cecilly,

When this sort of thing happens to a woman who has a uterus, I always advise to do the work and things will go back to baseline. It's not quite so rosy in a post-hysterectomy woman because the "heavy lifter" of the pelvis (the uterus) cannot pull the pelvic contents forward with intraabdominal pressure.

Nevertheless, from my perspective it's really the best you can do as well. Your vagina is still connected to your intestines at the top of your back vaginal wall. So learning to hold your abdominal wall up instead of in will aid in pulling your pelvic contents forward. The key is to prevent vaginal vault prolapse, which is when the vagina begins to turn inside-out from the top.

I would advise an external support garment as well - the V2 Supporter is most anatomic. And make sure never to strain against the toilet seat.

My guess is that this will get you back to baseline. The hopeful question is, if you are holding your organs toward the front, how can they prolapse further out the back?

Wishing you well!

Christine

Christine, how do I hold my abdominal wall up instead of in? I don't fully understand.

...by lifting your chest and keeping your lower belly relaxed. It's the WW posture and described throughout the forum and on YouTube as well.

Thank you Christine. I thought that was the case, but wasn't sure. I am reviewing the book now and refreshing the original workout. I also have one of the yoga DVDs, but no area available with a player in which to do that workout right now. Hoping to correct that soon. I will also order the V2 supporter (although not sure what size as my weight, 160, falls into the medium range but my hips, 45, fall just into the large range). Which size would you recommend? I so appreciate that us post surgery gals aren't completely overlooked, that you still offer some hope.

When I ordered my V2 supporter, my measurements were in the large range, when I normally wear an extra large in everything else. The V2 still seems a little big, but I have adjusted so it goes under my belly and I pull the side straps up over my hip bones. That does work for me, but every body type is different. Maybe, smaller might be better. That's the hard part, not being able to try it on before buying!

Aging gracefully, did you get the large or the extra large then? I'm just 1 inch into the large size by hip measurement which is my issue. I'm also in a slow weight loss mode, but my hip bones are naturally wide. I wonder if I order both sizes if the other can be returned? Some personal garments, once tried on, cannot. They aren't cheap either!

They did not have an extra large size, and like I said the large still seemed too big. I have a belly and weigh more than you do, so I imagine the large would just fall off you. I suppose you could return it, but not sure. I actually wear mine over my underwear.
I ordered mine on amazon which was cheaper than the one on the web page

Remember WW posture, Cecilly! I myself have trouble finding the time and opportunity to do workouts, but I stay in posture all the time. You are correct that it is time for a refresher.

None of us could avoid having a prolapse setback after an illness such as you describe. You just have to get back on the horse and keep working. Good luck with the V2 as well - Surviving

Thanks all. This morning I worked thru the original workout and stretches, and ordered the V2. Also, I ate a breakfast of steel cut oats with some almond milk and a raw apple (getting back to real food after being sick). Gonna keep food amounts on the light side to avoid that belly bloat. Really staying focused on correct posture and already had a decent poo while sitting forward on the toilet! So, I will press on with hope that things can stabilize.

Keep being hopeful, Cecilly! And, please keep in touch about your progress; I think it is really important for all of us to know how the post-hyst women are doing as well, that Whole woman can help them too.
Wish you the best!

I've always been a morning walker (with Springer Spanial in tow), but since being sick have noticed this new pulling feeling on my rectum when I'm on my feet or walking. So I'm wondering if it would be best for me to wait until the V2 supporter comes in before I resume my morning walks? I have other ways to exercise my dog and I can do the WW workouts for my personal exercise. I just don't want to aggravate things any further.

I think it depends on how you feel while walking....if you are trying to brush up on posture, walking is a great way to practice it. With a lively dog in tow, it might be a little hard to concentrate on your posture though. And if you are fearful while walking, might be best to wait until you can try the supporter. Up to you.....hard to say. - Surviving

There's no problem at all handling my dog (she walks at a perfect heel and doesn't pull unless we approach one of her canine friends, but I correct her immediately and she's fine), but right now what is concerning me the most is that as soon as I stand upright whether I'm standing still or walking, I feel a real sagging and pulling, almost stretching feeling with my increased bulge. Sitting down, lying down, bending over, and everything moves around, in, and up. The bulge has been there for awhile, but the pulling or tightening feeling is new since all the vomiting. I can't imagine not taking my morning walks...it's killing me to think I'll be having to spend most of my life now seated (I've always been a very active person and still have the energy to continue so). But until I get the V2 supporter, perhaps I should hold off. I don't want to aggravate and worsen the situation. I'm almost at a point of despair right now...just lost my mom on Wed., got sick Thursday, and left with a probable hopeless and irreversible bulge that is frightening me big time.

So sorry, Cecilly. My heart goes out to you at the loss of your mom.
Ya, it is hard when things are feeling bulgy, frightening in some ways. It didn't take long for my V2 to show up, and I would say, as long as worn properly, it does give the confidence needed as you work on the whole woman process.
I am thinking of you, and wish you well.

So very sorry to hear about your mom.....what a stressful time this must be. And prolapse certainly does not give us a break when we are going through hard times. Be good to yourself if you can. Hugs to you - Surviving

Thanks so much Aging gracefully and Surviving60. Means a lot. I'm 3 days now into a good WW morning workout. Today my prolapse stayed up a bit more during. I also took a good walk too in full WW posture with dog in tow! I could feel things during my walk, but not too bad till toward the end. I also found a helpful way to sit on the toilet to pee at least...sit on front of seat in tall posture with knees angled down and feet positioned back to the sides of the toilet, leaning slightly forward. My toes were supporting me with some weight also on front of seat. The pee flowed easily with full emptying of my bladder. I'm noticing that as soon as any fluid, gas, or solid waste settles into my lower pelvic region, the bulge is more distended. As soon as something goes, it is better. Still hopeful.

Dear Cecilly,
Sending (((hugs))) & Very Best Wishes to you.
