Rectocele?

Body:

I have been experiencing IBS type symptoms for several months and had a colonoscopy last week, which was all clear. Along with general bloating and altered bowel movements, I had been experienced a worsening sore, scratchy feeling inside the top of my rectum constantly, like I was sitting on sharp stones. Just prior to the colonoscopy I suddenly became aware of what felt like a large lump at the top back of my vagina. I went to see my doctor who though it might be a stool and said that the prep for the colonoscopy would clear it. I duly took the prep and when I was apparently all clean, I could still feel the lump in my vagina. The scratchy feeling went away for a few days after the colonoscopy, but is now back and the lump is still there. I went to my doctor again, who this time said she couldn’t feel the lump (even though it feels bigger than when she first felt it) and she only did an examination while I was lying down. I am being sent for a transvaginal ultrasound, but I wonder if I might have a very high rectocele, which has trapped some stool which I cannot empty, as it’s so high up. Does that sound feasible? I am in a bit of a panic as it’s becoming more and more uncomfortable day by day and if it is stool pieces, I have no means of getting it out, even though I am taking stool softeners. Over the last year I have had the feeling that things have ‘dropped’ slighting internally and I have had several bouts of constipation, so now I have convinced myself that I have a rectocele and am not sure where to turn next if the transvaginal ultrasound shows nothing. I’d be grateful for any advice on whether it might be possible that pieces of stool are being trapped and causing such discomfort. Thank you.

Hi Rainscreen and welcome. Perhaps the ultrasound might answer some questions. Are you still passing stool but think there is something that remains trapped up there? Can you press on the bulge and does that feel like it's doing anything? The feeling like sharp stones didn't actually start until after the colonoscopy? I suggest doing the self-exam that can be found in Christine's book, or if you don't have that yet, you can go here:

Many thanks for your response. Yes, I am still passing stool but it still feels like there's something trapped there. The sharp stone feeling was happening and worsening before the colonoscopy and then cleared after the cleaning prep, but then a couple of days later it started up again, giving me the impression that stool was getting trapped again. When I press on the bulge, it doesn't feel like it's moving anything, so I am very confused. I'm going to see the consultant tomorrow who did the colonoscopy, so I'm hoping he can enlighten me or point me in the right direction. Many thanks for your suggestions.
