Christine - Daily Exercise

Body:

Christine:
I have read both of your books and also have the DVD. All of your resources include a wide variety of exercise choices. My problem, however, is time. At the present, I am the primary 'bread-winner' in my family. My day starts at 5:30 for my first job which includes a daily commute. I return home about 6:00 at night to start dinner, eat, clean the kitchen, etc. My second job invloves sales work which I do at home at night.

Evening is not the time for me to exercise as I must commit whatever energy I have left to the second job and any personal obligations that I have.

I can firmly commit about 15-20 minutes of my morning to exercising.

I know that all of your exercise routines are helpful. However, I would like to ask you - knowing that someone only has 15-20 minutes a day - what are the exercises that you would definitely do on a daily basis to fit into that time period - the ones you would not go through the day without doing?

My only handicap is not being able to get on my hands and knees. I've had knee problems in the past and can't put my weight on them.

Thank you for your help. Hopefully 2008 will be a better year 'job-wise' for my husband and then maybe I will be able to dedicate more time to exercising. (Keeping my fingers crossed!)

I know I NEED to do someting everyday and I appreciate your help.

Goldfinch

Hi Goldfinch,

If it were me (which it is many days) I would just boot myself out the door first thing in the morning. I would choose a good path where I could circle my arms and really play with the posture rotating my head side to side, circling my shoulders, breathing deeply. I have a large, grassy hill I run up - at the top I forward bend to maximally stretch - and then I jog (in the posture!) the few blocks home. I don't always remember because when I get home I usually feel pretty terrific, but if I need to I do a little firebreathing. Then I remain conscious of my posture throughout the rest of the day.

:-) Christine

GF and Christine,

GF, I'm about your age and I am at work about 6:00 a.m. and am often there till 5:30. I have a zillion responsibilities including a second writing job, etc, and so I understand your problem with time.

When you take a potty break, do 20 firebreaths. Drink a glass of water and you'll be back into the potty in less than two hours. Repeat, repeat and repeat.

Do lots of deep breathing during the day. Just breathing deeply will exercise a lot of your body. Do it slowly.

If you are at a desk during the day, you can exercise in your chair and no one even has to know. As you sit as upright as you can, relax the belly and stretch everything up. Put your feet straight out in front of you and hold, hold, hold.

When you must pick something off the floor, bend over from the hip and stretch again, hang if you are alone and do several kegals.

Take the stair case, park in the far end of the lot and walk quickly. Walk on your toes.

I exercise in the kitchen while I'm cooking. I do plies and
stretches and balancing and warrior pose. My favorite pose is to stand on one leg and raise the other like splits in the air. I try to pull my face as close to the standing foot as possible.

Squat over the toilet. Squat any time and hold. Walking squats are hard, but they are really a good exercise.

Sit upright and stretch your arms over your head. Grasp your hands and close your fingers. Your arms should be squeezing your ears. Slowly drop your arms keeping your hands clasped until your hands are behind your head which remains upright. Hold.

I saw a program a while back that said quick bits of exercise during the day were as beneficial as long exercise practices. Makes sense to me.

These are just a tiny few things we can do to keep in shape while we are too busy to formally exercise.

More than anything, at our age - make it fun and within a month you will feel a lot stronger.

Affections,

Judy

Christine and Judy:
Thank you both for your wonderful ideas! I bought a new treadmill (with special cushioning) 3 months before my prolapse appeared. It fits beautifully in the bay window of my bedroom, but I have been afraid to use it thinking I would make things worse. Well - I think I now have a standing date with it every morning. Therefore, come rain or shine, cold weather or hot, I will always be able to get in my 15-20 minutes of walking - even uphill!

And Judy, your ideas perfectly round out my day! I do have a desk job, and 'private' cubicle where I can do most of your suggestions and no one will know! You're right about quick bits of exercise - and firebreathing in the bathroom is a great one. I just have to steal those precious few minutes during the work day for myself. I think I deserve them! I really appreciate the time you took to write. I've printed your response and will keep it at my desk starting today!

Thank you both again. Goldfinch
