A turning point w/severe uterine prolapse - do enzymes help???

Body:

I need to make a new decision re my prolapse & hope some of you may help. After managing my uterine prolapse with little discomfort for 2+ years, a prolonged severe cough several months back changed everything. My prolapse now is very severe (out of my body) and I suspect I may have a rectocele too. It's scary to see this low big bulge hanging & makes even walking uncomfortable. It has drastically changed my lifestyle so that I was actually thinking it may be foolish not to think about surgery, something I thought I would never consider, or perhaps it's time for a pessary. BUT, just as things were at their worse I had a colonoscopy. My bm's have changed, I strain a lot & thought there could be an obstruction. My prolapse is always worse when the colon is full. The colonoscopy showed all was well. It was interesting (and surprising!!) that during my "cleanout" for the procedure my prolapse was gone! I couldn't believe it & what a joy it was! I became hopeful again. Of course, as soon as I put food back into my body the prolapse quickly reappeared & is in the same severe state it was earlier. What I'm questioning now is, since I was ok with no food in my body, could this be a matter of enzymes, lack of acid to digest food properly or quickly enough? I am in my 70's & I understand this is often a problem. The gastrologist said there was no connection but he's not in my body & that was an amazing change! I'd like to pursue this, anyone have any thoughts on this? I do think in the meantime, to get my life back, I should try a pessary but also wonder if it helps with such a severe prolapse. Any thoughts on this will be appreciated.

I am almost identical to you...if my bowels are somewhat full my prolapse is much worse almost to the point of hanging out. I take laxitives and do what ever it takes to stay empty. Not good but better then seeing my bladder between my legs. I have a ring pessary with support that I used a lot when first diagnosed...and it worked well for me. Now as long as I keep my colon clear...I can go without the pessary. I try to use only milder laxitives, but sometimes it takes more....good luck, and it won't hurt to try a pessary. I found the ring easy to insert and take out.....Marilu

Hi,
I am in my seventies also. My prolapse is second degree but sometimes if I've been on my feet for a long period and I don't have my pessary in place it will peak out and be very uncomfortable.
So I don't have to strain on the toilet, I try to eat 25 grams of fiber a day, whole grains and lots of fruit and vegetables.
I cut out sugar and as much processed foods as I can and that helps to keep me fairly regular. If I'm a bit bound up I take a fiber supplement or extra magnesium.
There are times when I take a laxative that I get from the health food store.
I do take digestive enzymes before a meal and it does help with digestion.
I also try to(most of the time),sit and walk and in the whole woman posture and it helps to keep everything stabilized.
If you don't know about the wholewoman posture go to the main page and read the FAQ.
There is a lot of information in them. If you can, get Christine's book "Saving the Whole Woman." It can be ordered from the Whole Woman Store.
I think having a pessary is preferable to having surgery. I know it is my preference.
If you have any more questions do ask them and some one will try to answer them.
Regards,
Flora.
