TENS--Any success with this?

Body:

Has anyone had any success with using a TENS machine? I haven't yet gotten my book, so I don't know if its discussed in there.

A friend of mine in the UK suggested this machine to me: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3-in-1-FEMME-ELITE-MATERNITY-TENS-PELVIC-FLOOR-EXE...|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318|301:1|293:1|294:50

She says they are very commonly used postpartum in the UK and just about every woman who births in France uses one... and she says women get very good results. I told here its not common here among OB/GYN and she says that's because its not as profitable as surgery!

What do ya'll think? My midwife has heard of them being used for other issues (very commonly by chiropractic) and says it makes sense, and that she is intrigued, and to go for it.

TENS, aka e-stim can be used to arfiticially stimulate the muscles to contract. this is useful in a pp woman who has sustained nerve damage during the birth. what it does is, uses electricity in place of nerve impulses to stimulate the muscles to contract. so it would keep the muscles from weakening while the nerve heals.
a couple of things:
nerves stimulate muscles differently than electricity. nerves call upon a select group of muscle fibers depending on the task at hand. e-stim is all or nothing pretty much.
e-stim can sometimes be used to bulk up a muscle, but I'm not sure you get increased function of the muscle (its been a while since I've used it clinically).
if you have no nerve injury, I'm not sure why you'd even bother. if your nerves are stimulating your muscles, why would you need to supplement that with artificial stimulation of those same muscles? not sure if you'd gain anything at all.
bulking up pelvic muscles hasn't really been shown to heal prolapse, so I'm not sure that's an indication for TENS anyway.
and lastly, some of the TENS units available might not be the type you'd need to get a muscle contraction. many are for pain relief, and aren't strong enough for muscle contractions.
