What should I expect?

Body:

Looks like I need to have my colon & rectum removed due to aggravating circumstances with Crohns disease & precancerous lesions. I'm more concerned about my pelvic organs & what to expect following this surgery. Any Advice? I already have a uterine prolapse & a cystocele.

Hi Posturemama

Sorry to hear what you are up against. I guess you just gotta do what you gotta do. Make sure you get other independent opinions before embarking on your surgery, if you haven't already. I would guess that if you saw a gyn as well, before this op, they would suggest getting repairs done, cos that's what they do, but maybe not right now. It all sounds really complex.

I am sure you will find Web Forums about managing your body after surgery that will fill you in for what is in store, but I really have no idea how it will affect your uterus and bladder prolapses. I would be asking a lot of questions about what the surgeon will do with the space that is left if your rectum is removed. Find out if he will do prolapse repairs 'as part of the package' as a matter of course, or leave well alone. Then, at least you will know what to expect, and will be able to discuss your options. No doubt there will be many patients who have gone before you. I hope this is not urgent, because you will have quite a bit of information gathering to do before you have a good picture of what the future might hold.

Dear Posturemama,

Gracious, you really put things in perspective for the rest of us. I have seen Crohn's first hand and know it to be a most difficult genetic disease.

My only advice would be to follow your breath. Our breath creates the shape of our spine, which in turn supports our internal organs. Your bladder, uterus and small bowel should still be carried in front of the pubic bones and natural breathing will help keep them there.

You are in my prayers and I will love to hear how you are doing along your journey.
