Sitting with legs crossed

Body:

Hi All

I have been sitting on a dining chair at my computer of late, and it is not ideal. Don't ask why - too complicated! It will be fixed soon.

I have felt the need to cross my legs a lot (as opposed to sitting cross-legged). It has just occurred to me that this is possibly causing some sacroiliac problems because half of my pelvis is tilting backwards in this position. It also means that there is some pressure from the top thigh on my lower belly cos my upper body is still OK, and I think this may be pushing my bladder backwards.

What do others think?

Louise

Hi Louise, as I've said before, I'm a bit hopeless at working out some of the anatomical stuff in my mind, but after doing Alexander Technique for over 27 years I tend to feel what's going on and I still sometimes find myself crossing my legs. The feeling that I get when I realise what I'm doing is that I'm twisting and distorting my Alexander directions, clenching my buttocks and lower abdomen, presumably to maintain stability. If I do it for long enough I get pain in my SIs. Also, not good for varicose veins. Judith

all I can say is that when I sit like that I feel it afterwards. in my SI and low back. and now that I'm pg, my bottom leg falls asleep.

I don't know. I tend to sit that way often when I am teaching my son school. It doesn't seem to bother my prolapse. However, it can cause an SI flare. The PT told me never to sit that way. I never have been a good listener!
