Body:

I don't know if this is best placed in "Pelvic Health" or "Bodywork"...

Someone on another list passed this along to me. Unfortunately I don't live in that area anymore. Christine, what do you think? If anyone is in SoCal, they might want to check it out.

Hi Suzanne,

It looks to me like someone hitchhiking on the same old drivel, but with new buzz words like “poochy bellies.”

How the “core muscles’ can be “frequently lost to pregnancy” is a mystery to me and reflects a viewpoint that either doesn’t understand or place a lot of trust in the basic design of the female body.

Well "lost" seems a bit extreme, but isn't it safe to say that abdominal muscles are weakened after pregnancy? I know my abs are in bad shape, and I'm afraid to do anything really difficult, for fear of making the prolapse worse. I feel like I should know what to do (being in the fitness field) but I have no idea what exercises are good and which ones are bad! Very frustrating.

I thought that the class sounded promising, "poochy belly" comments notwithstanding. LOL There are other things addressed. But it doesn't take your more holistic approach. ;)

"Lost" was probably the wrong term but I am almost a year post partum and my upper ab muscles are still split. My lower ones (transverse) I believe I have not been exercising correctly my whole life. I think correcting ab problems/wrong exercisers like me is what these women are hoping to achieve. I hope so at least because this is part of what I am working on with my own PT.

For more info on transverse muscles check out that forum in Bodywork.

Yes, exercising the obliques and transverse abs is important for all postpartum women...even those of us wa-a-ay past babies. She may have a very good program, it's impossible to know. It's just that my hair stands on end when I hear this Pilates-influenced "core" stuff as well as flat belly. It's the antithesis of what we need. It sounds like her major influence has been Diane Lee, who has a tape for sale at www.dianelee.ca that some of the pp moms here have found useful.

And to think I started with Pilates as soon as I could after I delivered. Oh, if I only knew then what I know now. I am pretty sure the tennis with the pilates on top of all the damage I sustained during my first delivery are the reasons why I am here right now.

Of course every post partum woman wants to strenthen their core - or whatever - but not at the expense of my pelvic floor!!!!!!! Arghhh!!!!!

I got the Diane Lee video and yes it does sound similar to this. I have to say it is a little complicated to follow but perhaps that is just me. I will take it a long to the physio on Thursday and see if it is something she does.
