Dermoid cyst on Ovary

Hello all my wholewoman friends and happy new year!

I wish it was a happier new year for me. I was feeling great prolapse wise until Jan. 2nd. I started having some pelvic cramping and pain - which I thought was ovulation pain, but it lasted too long for that. I ended up going to emergency as my doctor is away for all of January. They did a urine test and found elevated levels of leukocytes and red blood cells, so they put me on cipro. I thought having a bladder infection was weird as I didn't have any burning. Anyway, after starting the cipro, I started getting this pressure feeling on my bladder and felt (and still feel) like I have to pee all the time. I knew this wasn't normal, so went back to emerg. I also checked my prolapse to make sure it hadn't worsened and I don't believe it did - still urethra sitting at opening. The doctor ordered an ultrasound and offered me new antiobiotics (which I refused as I wanted to finish the cipro). Anyway, I just had the ultrasound done today and I questioned the tech. as much as possible ( I know they aren't supposed to give that info. out). She said it looked like I had a dermoid ovarian cyst that may have ruptured - on my left ovary. That's about all she would tell me, but my guess from my symptoms is that is is causing the bladder pressure and frequent urination and pelvic pain. I have an IUD in (the copper one) and it is fine. Anyway, I won't know more til' the emerg. doc. gets the report. I guess I"m just asking for advice. I'm worried this pressure will make my prolapse worse. I can't live with this pressure comfortably and I'm afraid they'll recommend surgery - don't want my abdominals cut as I still am lifting an almost 2 year old! Anyway, just wondering if any of you can offer advice - I trust you more than many professionals!

I should note the U/S tech said it may have ruptured. Maybe it is the swelling causing pressure? I have no fever, so I doubt I have infection. Also wondering whether I may not be empyting my bladder fully with the results of my urine tests and that is why I presented with infection. .....Man, it is awful waiting for test results when you're a medical professional and know too much!

Hi Janice!

Oh, I'm so sorry you are going through this! Hopefully you will have much more information soon. While you are waiting, google "vaginal aspiration of dermoid cyst" and see what comes up. It is ultrasound-guided needle aspiration done vaginally. What an improvement over major surgery! I have no idea what consequences arise from rupture.

Please don't worry about your prolapse now. You must get the cyst sorted as first priority. They are almost always benign, but can grow like mad. All the techniques we use for prolapse stabilization/reversal will still be available to you after the procedure.

I know very little about this sort of thing, was wondering whether it can be removed laproscopically and then read christines post, very interesting.

Yeow! It is so hard waiting. Re the infection, if they still insist that it is a UTI or bladder infection I would be getting it cultured before any more antibiotics, to find out what bug it is/are. I like your theory about incomplete emptying. I do hope you are now completely emptying every day, on hands and knees, or however you find most effective.

Has anyone actually put their hands on you and had a feel through the abdominal wall, the old way? Or are they relying completely on pictures?

I would listen to the doctor before the tech, but it is interesting to know what he thought. Try not to panic. This too will pass.

Sorry you're having an awful time. I'm not a medical professional, but I had a dramatic ovarian cyst episode 4 years ago on holiday in France. Very sudden onset pain, no fever. Local cottage hospital thought appendicitis or ectopic pregancy ( and it certainly felt that bad!) and sent me to city hospital where I was scanned and monitored and on antibiotics and painkillers.

I was told that the infection was in the pelvic cavity because a huge cyst had ruptured. I'd had a distended abdomen for a few months but put it down to high fibre eating! It cleared up with anitbiotics and I was lucky not to have urinary symptoms. Interestingy, the consultant said that if they had to operate they'd do it 'without cutting ' which sounds like what Christine mentions, but it never got that far. Definitely worth asking them.

Hi guys,

Thanks so much for all your advice and thoughts! My bladder pressure comes and goes and when it is there, it feels like my pants are too tight or someone has just kicked me in the lower abs - not unliked a baby inutero suddenly kicking or punching. It is annoying to say the least! My pain is becoming more localized to the left side of my pelvis and sometimes radiates into the groin. I now have left-sided tenderness on my abdomen. No fever yet, and I'm off the cipro, so we'll see what happens. Sometimes I get a sharp pain, but it subsides. I've got a pretty high pain tolerance and to be honest, the uncomfortableness of this reminds me of being pregnant with my daughter when I discovered my prolapse. I"ll be running back to emerg. if I get a fever or unrelenting sharp pains. But for now, I just wait and try to gently go about my routines.......So hard to rest when you're a mom of young kids!

I'll keep you posted. And thanks doubtful for your experience - that helps! Looking online, these dermoid cysts are pretty yucking looking formations ie. hair, teeth, sweat glands - ewww!
