Fresh Food-it's out there!

Body:

Hi ladies! Just wanted to remind those of you who are looking for healthier food, there is a lot of fresh veggies and fruits ripening and ready for the picking. Berries are available here in the Southwest and will be ready later in the summer in the Northern States. If you are willing to pick your own, go to www.pickyourown.org - a wonderful page giving directions to farms all across the nation, just pick your state. Some of them pick for you and some of them are organic or chemical free farms. Now would be a good time to buy in bulk. My husband is bringing me 5 pounds of organic blueberries next week - cost is $8.00! (so cheap compared to storebought). You can wash and freeze these for use all winter to eat as a snack or in pancakes and muffins or bread. They're high in antioxidants, too. Don't forget to check out the farms in your state at www.localharvest.org. Also, we invested in a Food Saver vaccuum pack machine, and I am amazed at how much food I am NOT wasting!

The pickyourown website has several links to canning and freezing. Also, there is a new diet called the 100 mile diet where people try to buy all their food within a hundred miles of where they live - www.100milediet.org. Personally, I'd go for the 25 mile diet, ha!

Happy and Healthy Eating!

Thanks for the great advise! When you said, “Food is extremely important, what you eat and how much……Our bodies do not know what to do with genetically modified food or chemically produced food and will throw off some of it, but the rest is stored in the fat cells and is bio-accumulative…..” I was going to say that I was hoping to start a garden. I currently live in an apt. w/ no balcony & ALL of my herbs die within 2 months. My mom does have a yard, as well as my cousin, grandma, and my dad’s estate. Talk about the 100 mile diet. With gas prices, I’m like you – the 10 mile diet. My dad grew up on a farm & lives about an hour and a half from me. I guess that’s 70 miles? Not sure.

This is sooo encouraging & great! So THIS is how you’re able to afford organic. This and perhaps you are maybe retired & a natural chef so you are able to cook all of the food you pick. Unfortunately, there are so many farms that are going out of business. :(
