unnecessary intervention?

Body:

I have a question.

Is it possible for a doctor to aggravate a rectocele?

When I went in to check for prolapse the doctor had me bare down and what I saw frighten me, to say the least. I didn't see a rectocele, until (warning graphic details ahead) he inserted his finger into my anus and forced tissue out of my vagina. It was painful. As he did that he said yup thats a 3rd degree rectocele. Ever since he did that I've had much discomfort in my anal area. My bowels move fine. I've taken a mirror to see what the big deal was while I was defecating. It looked to me like the weight of my waste is pulling down my rectocele. I have soft stools. Its not constipation. My prolapses take turns. They usually alternate between the cyctocele and the rectocele. I'm happy to report that my uterus feels like its back in its place. Some times I wonder if I'm feeling my cervix in my vagina or is it the rectocele? Because when I reach in I feel the cervix is high. Its only after I've defecated that its low. Its not low for long. Is there hope for a rectocele? I'm almost convince that a rectocele would be the most stubborn prolapse to fix, or rather, make it symptom free. I didn't feel this way until the doctor did that to me. Did any of your doctors do that to you in order to determine a rectocele?

No, my doctor certainly didn't put a finger in my anus and push the rectocele out of my vagina, particularly without telling what he was going to do. That sounds like the sort of sick party trick medical students would do on cadavers. Did you have anybody with you to witness it? In Australia there always has to be a woman present when any gynaecological examinations are done. It can be a little disarming to have an unknown receptioniste brought in to witness when you are quite happy for the family doctor to do a PAP smear!

I would think that to push the rectocele from the rectum with a finger while you are bearing down would indeed be risking further damage to the fascia, but I am not trained in these examinations, that's just my intuitive response. We do hear periodically on the Forum of doctors doing horrible things to women. Thankfully they are in the minority, and I am sure that won't make you feel any better.

I think I would be changing doctors if that is how he tells you what he is going to do before he does anything. The first rule for doctors is "Do no harm". I would not trust this man with my body.

I will make a mental note myself to always ask the doctor exactly what s/he is going to do when they have not done it to me before. Assume nothing.

Splinting may help you with defaecating, by ironing out the kink that is the rectocele, so the bowel contents don't distend it and push it out into the vagina. (Splinting is putting your thumb in your vagina while defaecating and just gently pressing the rectocele back into line. There are numerous other variations of it in other posts. Different women have different techniques). That way it should be in its normal position after a bowel motion and stay where it is supposed to be, hopefully until it fills again in a straight line, about 20 minutes after eating. I would think you could experience some improvement once you give it the opportunity to not get kinked in the first place. Just ensure that you visit the toilet 20 minutes after eating in case your bowel fills, and you can empty it before it becomes distended. Always listen to your bowel and answer its call.

The 20 minute trick was taught to me when we were trying to cure my daughter's childhood constipation and had her sit on the toilet 20 minutes after eating. Her problem was that the stool would build up because she could not feel the sensation of wanting to empty. Sometimes it worked. We finally cured her with a chiropractic miracle. I am a little concerned now that she may develop a rectocele. At least I can help to deal with it if she does.

I used to have a lot of trouble with rectocele, especially when stressed (I think I kind of lose the sensation of wanting to use my bowels when the adrenaline is running high. It is an unnecessary distraction when I am being chased by a tiger.). Now I have very few problems. Others don't have the success that I have, but every woman has a different body. It is worth giving it a try.

Cheers

Louise

Thank you Louise for your thoughtful response. I love reading your post. I think your so wise. I really mean that. I can bet you anything that he caused this rectocele. Thats how they make there money, by causing problems right? Thats why I'm so reluctant to see doctors. I'm suppose to see a urogynecologist tomorrow. Different doctor. NO WAY will I ever go see this other guy who thrust his finger from my rectum out of my vagina. I'm not kidding when I said it hurt. It really hurt. Ever since then I have problems! I really don't want to see this doctor tomorrow. I'm afraid they're just going to make it worse for me. I have a hard time trusting them. And yes there was nurse there with the doctor when he did that to me. She witnessed it.

At the very moment I'm so FRUSTRATED!!!!!!!!!! I so want to vent but I've got little ones around. My little ones make it extra challenging to defecate. I get no privacy. I really need to concetrate when I'm moving my bowels. I gave up. I was on the toilet for the longest time! The gravity was inviting my cyctocele on its way out of my body. That really boils my blood!!!!!!!!! Nothing else makes me more angry than to notice my P.O.P! I'm elated on my good days but on my bad days, watch out: I'm going on a ram page! My bowels are soft there just not moving!! What is the deal?@!@??? I tried the kink out technique within the vagina. Its doesn't help much in my case. I need a broad cyber shoulder to cry on. My husband just made me garlic mac-n-cheese. I forgot to thaw out some meat. oops. He wants me to heal. He is shaking right now. And I think I'm handling my self rather well considering how angry I am.

So, Does ANYONE have any ideas on how I can SUCK my bladder right back into my body and tone up my rectum? Any replies would be so greatly appreciated.

Hi again Fruitful Womb

((Hugs)). It's horrible when you feel helpless, and can see it is also affecting your man.

Take a deep breath and wait until tomorrow to ask the urogynaecologist.

Some more thoughts. Different medications and remedies will slow down movement of your intestinal tract. Possible candidates might be antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications, prostaglandins, iron supplements, liquorice, probably others. Check with a good pharmacist on possible drug side effects.

Maybe it has nothing to do with your urogenital tract. My daughter suffered from urinary and bowel incontinence until the age of seven, when I realised that she had no sensation of wanting to evacuate, and couldn't tell me if she had done a wee or a poo after a big and obvious Per-LOP in the bowl. Chiropratic treatment fixed her quite quickly (90% in two treatments), possibly restoring the nerve function? I know your sensation is there, but it was a nerve activity problem for my daughter. By the way she did have very large dry bowel motions, like big man sized! But she also had runny, soft motions as well.

I am wondering if your urge to empty your bowel could be because there is something else up there, making you feel full. This may seem like a panic reaction, but it sounds like your body is not operating how you would expect it to. I suggest that you check with a trusted family doctor to ensure that your digestive system is OK, ie there are no blockages.

Re sucking your bladder up, this might sound really inconvenient and horrible, but have you tried pooing on all fours with your belly hanging loose? I don't know if it would be even possible but it might allow gravity to hold your bladder forwards?

Thinking of you.

Louise

First of all, I want to say...
I'm sorry Christine, I know how to spell your name now. I've been reliant on those edit features and for some reason the day I misspelled your name, I didn't have the luxury of using edit feature.

I've been rung through the wringer so my grammar sucks too. For now anyways.

Back to you Louise,
Its funny that you mention all fours for pooing. After I had my first baby I couldn't poop. If I tried it would hurt so SO badly. It was as painful as having a baby!!! Husband decided to use an enema on me. I was on all fours. It worked. Maybe I could try that. I feel like I have a small window of opportunity to heal after postpartum. My baby is 3 months. I'm giving my self a year to hit full recovery. The only thing that keeps me going is improvements. Any set backs really throws me off. One year and hopefully I'll be in good shape. Is that realistic? Maybe two years since in Chinese Medicine the postpartum period is two years.

I'm glad that the Chiropractor helped with your daughter. If I end up going tomorrow I'll mention the digestive concerns. Thanks. I'm not on any medications but I do take vitamins and herbs. And a protein drink thats supposedly loaded with collagen.

Just browsing through these pages it seems a lot of women have problems with bowel movement....I discovered Aloe Vera shortly after my disastrous operation. I found that I did not want to strain when going to the loo and was using laxatives. Aloe Vera is a more natural way of moving the bowels and tones the whole digestive system, it can be taken in liquid form or as a tablet, once a day is fine. you should be able to find it in any health shop...I used to buy it in East Africa so it is world wide. Might help a bit with those might help a bit with those awkward moments, thanks to all hose women hwo have replied to my forum topic, what wonderful support, it is great to know that you are all out there, Anna
