question for Sue

Body:

Hi Sue,

I hope you don't mind me asking this from you but I know you have mentioned before that you walk with a cane. I have a friend with juvenile athritis who is interested in trying the posture for her general health as her posture is understandably rather affected. She also uses a cane and is having problems getting into the posture while using the cane. She uses it mainly for balance and can't seem to pull up in the way she needs to while relying on the cane for balance. She can do it while standing still but not while moving around. How do you do this? Again, I hope that you don't mind me asking! :) Thank you.

Thats ok - Yes I have a walking stick also for balance... I think it is a practice thing and i tend to not walk in a straight line lol

The cane is angled more outwards than straight up and down...

I find it works fine with the posture etc... Not sure what else I can tell you lol

I think you have to get used to the cane as an extention of yourself - Not as an inanimate object connected to your hand. My cane is also a different cane called a fischer stick where the handle is different. With this cane your hand is more open and you kinda leannn on it more than hold it grip it etc... My cane was also measured for me (You hafta have it not too long or short etc)

This is the handle of a fischer stick.... Clickyhandlelink

As you are in UK - Occupational Therapy should help her to get a Fischer Stick off the NHS - They are silver with a black handle but OT stores also replace the ends when they wear out... I find it much better than a conventional walking stick...

Hope that helps..

I think this is my stick... (Though mine has two black rings and lots of holes but I can take a pic if you need one)
