Rectocele Repair

Body:

I just wanted to say that I am not quite 2 weeks out from a vaginal hysterectomy (I kept my ovaries) and rectocele repair. So far so good on the healing process, the repair stitches are reminiscent of an episiotomy-just more stitches. I also think I have focused more on the discomfort because of not having a precious baby to nurture while I recover. I am a 34 year old mother of 3. The hysterectomy was due to non stop bleeding even on oral contraceptives of a variety and changing dosage every 2-3 months for the last 2-3 years. The bleeding and rectocele were becoming more than I could deal with as a busy mom and elementary teacher. You have 20 little bodies in the hall waiting on you while you attempt a difficult void in the bathroom. Pain, privacy and ultimately pride led me to the decision to go ahead with the surgery. Originally a bladder sling was in the surgical plan, but we were able to put that off because I have been without symptoms for 1 year. We hope (and I pray) that the bladder will be better without the pressure of the uterus. I am optimistic about sex- my husband is already ready to go and I have and feel the 4-5 inches of stitches-so... we have taken a different approach to intimacy. However, the anticipation is exciting. I know we are entering a new phase and although I am concerned about sex in general after the surgery I think new can be good. He may appreciate what I went through more later and goodness knows I won't miss those pesky never ending cyles.

I am wondering how long my recovery will truly take. The doc said 3-6 weeks. Maybe half days at work after 3 weeks if I can stay off my feet. ( Can you do that with 20 -7 and 8 year olds?) Should I even try?

Hi Teachingmom

It's great that you are feeling good after surgery. I hope it continues as well.

This Forum is not a place where you will find many women who have had rectocele surgery, though there will be a few; those who have had hysterectomy likewise.

To find large numbers of women who have had these surgeries you will get much more feedback from the Forums on sites that promote gynaecological surgery, which Wholewoman does not. Your doctor's estimate would probably be realistic, and it is important that, having had the surgery, you follow his orders strictly re the recovery period. I know this may be difficult for you with three children and a job, but it is not an easy path you have taken. The alternative path of continued bleeding and exploring other options may have been more daunting for you.

I am sorry you have chosen to have this surgery as almost any surgical intervention in the pelvic area will compromise the structural geometry of the pelvis, especially where the uterus is removed. Wholewoman posture relies strongly on all of the structures in the pelvis being present. Diet, clothing design, lifestyle factors and appropriate exercise may still be of some benefit to you, but that's about it.

I suggest you look to another Forum for the best info on post-surgery and beyond. Good luck.

Cheers

Louise

Hi teachingmo

I was really interested to read your post as this site appears to focus on non-surgical methods. I'm glad to hear your doing well and feeling positive about the future.

I am 47, four children, all vaginal deliveries. I have a prominent rectocele, cystocele and probably erythrocele and am struggling like we all do to come to terms with the effects. I have real trouble emptying my bowels and always have to assist manually. Like you I have a busy working life and am finding it hard to cope on a daily basis.

I am scheduled for surgery on the rectocele in decemeber. My surgeon has suggested leaving the cystocele for now as I have had some improvement recently with symptoms. I would be so interested in your general progress, how your finding things, improvement in bowel function, whether sex is good/bad/better/worse.

Its so hard to find genuine feedback from people following surgery and I'm still wavering on the surgery having read some of the negatives listed on this forum. But I am finding the difficulties very hard to deal with and would love to get some continued, honest feedback from you throughout the next few weeks. I know we're all different and experiences may be different for all but I am so interested to know how people feel following surgery.

I hope your good recovery continues. Take care.
