Body:

Hello everyone, I have just been to see a gynecologyst and have been diagnosed with a cystocele also a slight rectocele. My family Dr. said it would need surgery, but the specilast said I have a choice - to live with it - a pessary or - he would do surgery if I wanted. I had a hysterectomy 7 years ago- 57 years old.
I am thinking about a pessary, I will talk to my family Dr. to get her opinion. Its taken me 6 mos to get into see the gynecologist and all this time I have just assumed it would mean surgery.... I'm quite happy to find out it doesn't have to be.
I would really like to hear from any members that have tried a pessary.
My symptoms are not really bad, some lower back pain, have to use the washroom everywhere I go and on bad days, I can feel the cystocele in my undies- rather uncomfortable! Some days it is not noticible.
I am realy glad to have found this site, as I haven't talked to anyone with my problem and didn't know it was so common.
I especially feel bad for all the young women with small children who have this problem and have to live with it...
Any replys would be appreciated. Bye for now..

Chickadee, I have found that wearing stretch panties really helps my prolapse. I used to wear cotton panties and a brace on top on my bad days but the stretch panties do the same thing and I waar them all thel time. I get Flexees but there are other makes that are just as good.
About the pessary: From what I have read it is only a temporary fix. Eventually it will aggravate the tissues that it is pushing against and you will have to stop using it. I'm glad that your doctor told you that you have a choice. Mine did too and then I discovered Christines place. So many doctors just say have the surgery.

Chickadee_ .....Thank you for your reply mariezee, I will give the stretch panties a try and look for that brand. My belly seems so bloated, I do need some support in that area too.

Hi Chickadee

So glad you have made it to this site. Better times are ahead for you with this wonderful group of women.

The most important changes you can make are in your posture. Have a look at the www.wholewoman.com Homepage at the FAQ's, which go some way to illustrating how important really good female posture is in keeping prolapsed pelvic organs where they are meant to be, inside you!

If you are a reader, get Christine's book Saving the Wholewoman, and her exercise DVD. From the Wholewoman Homepage, link to the Wholewoman Center site, then from there to the Wholewoman Store where you can buy these online.

There are some other things that will help, secondary to posture, such as keeping your bowel healthy so you don't have to strain on the toilet; altering your clothing style to your abdomen is not squeezed; and also trying some sort of pessary. I suggest that you study up on Wholewoman posture and adopt it as your new posture as soon as possible, then work on keeping your bowel light, then alter some clothes.

After a couple of weeks of all this, you might not even need to try a pessary, but if you do find it helpful, then it is another tool you have at your disposal. Improvements will be gradual, and may involve the odd day when you think you are back where you started, but you will probably see significant improvement after a few months.

You'll find plenty of posts on all these topics in the Forums as well. Just take half a day and go for a trawl. If only it was that easy!

Cheers
